Randy Travis is a born-again gospel singer.

He laughs remembering the day he realized performing for a church crowd meant sharing how he met Jesus.

"I was scared to death," Travis stated via phone. "I sing, not preach.

It would be my first time performing gospel songs in a church, let alone a testimony.

"I panicked." His rationale was valid.

When Travis, one of country music's most enduring artists, released the gospel CD Inspirational Journey and began singing at churches and revivals in 2000, some Christians were skeptical.

The Marshville, Union County, N.C., native wasn't known for his religion. Travis was best renowned for his lengthy upbringing in trouble.

I anticipated a response of 'What is this, another record sales strategy?'

They were doubtful "Travis said. "And they could see that I was scared.
